Job Title Nurse Practitioner I

Reports To

The Nurse Practitioner I position will report directly to the Practice Administrator and Medical Director, UCF Health

Position Summary

Responsible for providing general medical care for patients under the direction of a Physician. Assesses patients during routine office visits and physical exams. Recommends diagnostic tests, drug therapy, and medical treatments as appropriate. Refers more serious cases to the supervising Physician or Specialist. Writes patient care plans and ensures that all required medical information is current, complete, and accurate. Provides support to area personnel and communicates significant concerns to management. Projects the clinic’s professional reputation.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Assumes responsibility for the effective delivery of assigned medical care.

  • Reviews patient care plans, charts, and records.
  • Assesses patients during routine office visits. Diagnoses common illnesses and recommends care procedures, treatments, medications, and drug therapy as appropriate.
  • Orders routine diagnostic tests and assists patients in arranging appointments. Discusses and explains procedures.
  • Conducts physical examinations and assesses and records the general health of patients.
  • Recommends preventive practices, dietary requirements, and healthy living guidelines to patients.
  • Prescribes routine drug therapy in accordance with established protocol. Thoroughly explains drug benefits, side effects, and potential reactions.
  • Refers more complex cases to supervising Physician for consultation. Directs patients to Physician Specialists, as necessary.
  • Assists Physicians during examination and treatment of patients. Prepares rooms, sterile instruments, bandages, and other medical supplies, as necessary.
  • Completes all medical care functions in compliance with established protocol and clinic policies. Strictly follows infection control procedures and safety regulations.

Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective professional relations with patients, families, and external caregivers.

  • Oversees appointment bookings, ensuring that preference is given to patients in emergency situations; maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Demonstrates and promotes patient centered care.
  • Resolves urgent care problems and complaints.
  • Ensures patients and families are properly educated and informed of care procedures.
  • Gathers information from families and caregivers to identify concerns, priorities, and resources.
  • Projects the clinic’s professional reputation to outside contacts.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.

Assumes responsibility for maintaining and updating patient charts and records.

  • Formulates and updates patient care plans; orders, prepares, and inspects patients' charts; posts tests and examination results.
  • Observes, records and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians; administers prescribed medications as directed.

Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with Physicians, medical staff, area personnel, and management.

  • Assists with the preparation of equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Provides support and assistance to assigned Physicians, nurses, and area staff, as necessary.
  • Communicates regularly with team members.
  • Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
  • Makes recommendations for revising policies and procedures and improving patient care processes.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Maintains Florida Licenses and Certifications as required.
  • Annual CPR, OSHA, HIPPA training/certifications.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participates in continuing education programs.

Education

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Work Experience

  • Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.

Certification

  • Current State License.
  • Annual CPR, OSHA, HIPPA training/certifications.
  • Other certifications as required.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of diagnosing and treating routine illnesses.
  • Knowledge of drug therapy benefits and side effects.
  • Understanding of clinic policies, safety precautions, infection control, and established medical procedures.

Skills/Abilities

  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.

  • Able to coordinate well with others.
  • Able to use all related medical equipment, machines, monitors, and computer applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients (up to 20 lbs.), manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

Interpersonal Skills

  • A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.

Work Environment

  • Environmentally controlled medical office environment; Work hours subject to office needs to ensure coverage during all hours of operation; Frequent exposure to bodily fluids; Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a laboratory and medical office environment; May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask; Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public.
